Centre for the Study of French Law, Faculty of Law, TU

France has long played a role in relation to, and had influence upon, the law in Thailand. This can be seen from the fact that the legal system in Thailand, as in France, uses the “Civil Law System.” Since the reign of King Rama V, Thailand has adopted legal codes and drafted many laws including the Criminal Law R.S. 127, the Civil and Commercial Code, the codes on legal procedures and other laws, to adapt the law to make it more modern.

Due to this influence of French law, many Thai teachers and students were sent to study law in France. Therefore, to develop the body of knowledge of French law, in accordance with the policy of the Faculty of Law, Thammasat University, the Faculty established the “Centre for the Study of French Law” in 1988, to be a centre for knowledge on French law specifically with the responsibility of coordinating and promoting cooperation and academic exchange with educational institutions in France, running academic conferences and special lectures about French law on various occasions, together with sponsoring activities to enhance students’ skills in French language and culture.
